Former roles in both the public and private sectors as well as owning a retail business, Van Helden Gallery for 15 years, saw John develop a passion for people and a commitment to helping people achieve both their personal and business-based financial goals.

Nature and Scope of the Advice - what we do

John offers a whole-picture approach to financial planning, providing a personalised service tailored to the financial objectives of his clients.

He is impartial, providing financial planning in partnership with some of the world's leading financial service providers

John provides advice on:

  • Lifetime Cash Flow Planning: where you are now - where you want to be - how are you going to get there, empowering people to be confident in making financial lifestyle decisions - full analysis aligned with your financial objectives

  • Cash and debt management - reviewing cash flow, and debt and providing cash reserves

  • Personal and Business Risk Planning - ensuring a plan, resource or cash is available in the event of disability, illness, or death. Providing information on the relevant documentation that may be required- Wills, EPA, Shareholder Agreements.

  • KiwiSaver - advise clients on the most appropriate schemes and funds to meet their savings and retirement goals.

  • Retirement Planning - Using Lifetime Cash Flow planning to understand if you will meet your financial objectives

John follows the six-step financial planning process.

  1. Defining the scope of engagement

  • explain the process, find out your needs and make sure we can meet them. You can ask us about our background, how we work and how we charge.

2. Identifying your goals

  • work with you to identify your short and long-term financial goals – this stage serves as a foundation for developing your plan.

3. Assessing your situation

  • take a good look at your financial position – your assets, liabilities, risk coverage and investments

4. Preparing your plan

  • recommend suitable strategies, products and services, and answer any questions you have.

5. Implementing recommendations

  • Once you’re ready to go ahead, your financial plan will be put into action. We will assist in applications if required or where appropriate we may work with specialist professionals, such as an accountant or solicitor.

6. Reviewing your plan

  • Your circumstances, lifestyle and financial goals are likely to change over time, so your financial plan must be regularly reviewed, to make sure you keep on track.

How John is paid

John is paid a salary provided by Coltman Limited

Fees: Expenses; Commissions paid to Coltman Limited

Plan Fees ( all plan and review fees are plus GST)

There is no fee for our initial meeting.

If the clients circumstances require a plan to be provided:

Plan Fees

$850 - $2,500 depending on the amount of work required.

A plan is only offered if after, assessing information provided by the client, developing a plan will help guide the client towards their lifestyle and financial goals.

The value of this plan once presented is judged solely by the client and if not satisfied that the plan will help towards their lifestyle and financial goals, no plan fee is charged and the plan is returned.

Plan fees are on a case-by-case basis, as everyone is different. The cost of the plan is determined by the amount of time required to develop the plan. The hourly rate for this is $175.00. Minimum plan fee $850.00

These fees will be payable within 14 working days of the plan/recommendations being presented and accepted.

Review Fee

The annual review fee is charged on an hourly rate of $175.00. Min review fee $350.00.

Review fees are discussed in the initial meeting with the client. Clients are under no obligation to have an annual review.

We will contact you annually and offer to review your situation to make sure your plan is still suitable for your situation and objectives. Because personal circumstances change over time, it is important to review. Clients can review at any time.

Other work

There is no charge for phone calls or enquiries.

Sometimes we are asked to do other work or review other advisers’ work and planning, this is done on an hourly rate.

A scope of time will be provided for this work based on an hourly rate $175.00

Commission on products used in planning

Coltman Ltd may receive a commission from the providers on whose products we give financial advice (product providers).

If you decide to implement Insurance or KiwiSaver, which has been recommended, as part of a financial plan, the product provider may pay a commission to Coltman on implementation.

These commissions are used to run Coltman, the business, pay support staff and cover all business costs with running the business.

The amount of commission will vary depending on the amount and type of product. You will be provided with full details of the commission receivable for all product recommendations.

The following commissions may be paid by the product provider:

Initial commission – a percentage of the value of the product being purchased;

and

Servicing commission

  • Insurance – a percentage of the value of your annual premiums, usually calculated at the end of each month in which your insurance policy renews.

  • KiwiSaver – a percentage of the average value of the investment over predefined periods (typically monthly)

    Specific commissions payable will be advised to you at the time we provide our advice and before implementation.

We DO NOT, participate in supplier-funded promotional events or receive non-monetary benefits from product providers.

Client referral to another adviser- no payment is received for client referral to a third party Eg. John refers a client to a Mortgage Broker or Investment Adviser

Conflicts of interest

Managing Conflict of Interest

To ensure that we prioritise the client’s interests above our own, we follow an advice process that ensures our personalised recommendations are made on the basis of the client’s goals and circumstances, as advised to us.

John completes regular training, including how to manage conflicts of interest and has a regular compliance review of his advice process and his compliance programme is reviewed annually by an external Compliance Adviser.

Complaints

When we receive a complaint, we will consider it following our internal complaints process:

We will consider your complaint and let you know how we intend to resolve it. We may need to contact you to get further information about your complaint.

We aim to resolve complaints within 10 working days of receiving them. If we can’t, we will contact you within that time and let you know we need more time to consider your complaint.

We will contact you by phone or email to let you know whether we can resolve your complaint and how we propose to do so.

If we can’t resolve your complaint, or you aren’t satisfied with the way we propose to do so, you can contact the Financial Dispute Resolution Service (FDRS).

FDRS provides a free, independent dispute resolution service that may help investigate or resolve your complaint if we haven’t been able to resolve your complaint to your satisfaction.

Other information & duties

John Coltman has duties under the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013 relating to the way that he gives advice. He is required to:

  • give priority to your interests by taking all reasonable steps to make sure our advice isn’t materially influenced by our own interests

  • exercise care, diligence, and skill in providing you with advice

  • meet standards of competence, knowledge and skill set by the Code of Professional Conduct for Financial Advice Services (these are designed to make sure that we have the expertise needed to provide you with advice)

  • meet standards of ethical behaviour, conduct and client care set by the Code of Professional Conduct for Financial Advice Services (these are designed to make sure we treat you as we should and give you suitable advice).
